What is Epitalon?

Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a synthetic analogue of epithalamin, a pineal-gland extract studied for several decades by Vladimir Khavinson's group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. Most of the published research on this specific compound originates from that research group and Russian-language gerontology literature; independent Western replication is limited, which is worth weighing when reviewing the claims made about it.

Proposed mechanism

The primary research interest is telomerase activity — early in-vitro and rodent studies from the Khavinson group reported that Epitalon could induce telomerase expression in some cell lines and extend proliferative lifespan in cultured human cells. Proposed downstream effects on pineal melatonin regulation and circadian signalling have also been explored, though the mechanistic picture is far less established than for peptides with a larger independent literature base.

Research applications

Telomerase / cellular senescence research

The best-known research thread is in-vitro work on telomerase induction in human somatic cell lines, used as a model for cellular aging.

Pineal / circadian signalling

Because it is modelled on a pineal-derived peptide, some research has examined effects on melatonin regulation and circadian rhythm markers in animal models.

Longevity research models

Rodent lifespan studies from the originating research group have been cited in the longevity-research literature, though largely from a single research group's output.

Handling & safety

Supplied to licensed practitioners and research professionals only. Highly soluble in aqueous buffer; prepare working solutions fresh. Store lyophilized at −20 °C protected from light. Not evaluated by the FDA and not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Questions researchers ask

Is the telomerase research on Epitalon well established?

It comes primarily from one research group's decades of work; it hasn't been broadly replicated in independent, large-scale studies the way some other peptides have. Treat it as an active research question rather than a settled finding.
