Delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) was first isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood in 1977 by Swiss researcher Karl Schoenenberger's group, making it one of the older characterized neuropeptides in this catalog. "Emideltide" is the compound's assigned INN-style name; DSIP remains its more common research designation.
Despite its name, DSIP's exact receptor and mechanism of action have never been fully resolved — no dedicated receptor has been definitively identified, and its effect on EEG delta-wave sleep in the original animal studies has been inconsistently replicated. Later research has looked more broadly at its role in stress-hormone regulation (ACTH, cortisol) than at sleep specifically.
The original and still most-cited research application is EEG-based sleep-stage studies in animal models, examining delta-wave (slow-wave) sleep.
